The CMB Before You Build System

You have an idea.

That does not automatically mean you have a viable offer.

A practical idea and offer validation system for working out whether something deserves more time, money or effort before you build the whole thing.

No startup theatre. No automatic AI applause. No building 47 Canva pages before checking whether anyone actually wants the thing.

One practical system for deciding what deserves your next move.

Clearer idea • Better evidence • Smaller test • Sensible decision

What needs checking before you build?

Work through the parts of your idea that are easiest to assume and most expensive to get wrong.

THE IDEA

Define what you are actually proposing, who it is for and what outcome it is supposed to create.

THE PROBLEM

Separate a real customer problem from a vague frustration, personal preference or solution looking for a problem.

THE EVIDENCE

Record what you know, what you believe and what still needs to be tested.

THE DECISION

Choose whether to proceed, test first, rework the idea or park it for now.

Inside the system

Everything is designed to help you move from an exciting idea to a grounded next step.

IDEA DEFINITION

Clarify the idea, offer or project before you start adding features, pages, names and unnecessary complications.

FACTS AND ASSUMPTIONS

Make the invisible assumptions visible so you can decide which ones actually need evidence.

CUSTOMER AND COMMERCIAL CHECK

Examine the customer problem, alternatives, differentiation and willingness to pay.

VALIDATION TEST PLAN

Design a small test with clear success and failure thresholds before you spend heavily.

Not just another idea worksheet.

Because circling “my idea solves a problem” is not market research.

Problem before polish

Start with the customer problem and the current alternative, not the colour palette.

Evidence over enthusiasm

Separate what has actually been observed from what you would like to be true.

Small tests first

Test the riskiest assumption with the smallest useful experiment.

A decision at the end

Finish with a clear next move instead of another page of thoughts.

How it works

1. Define the idea.
State what you are considering, who it is for and what it is meant to help them do.

2. Separate facts from assumptions.
Record the evidence you already have and identify the gaps that could change your decision.

3. Examine the problem and alternatives.
Look at what people do now, what they already pay for and why your proposed option might matter.

4. Identify the biggest risks.
Consider commercial, operational, delivery, pricing and capacity risks.

5. Design one small validation test.
Choose a test that can produce useful evidence without requiring a full build.

6. Set the threshold.
Decide in advance what result would support proceeding and what result would make you rethink it.

7. Make the decision.
Choose PROCEED, TEST FIRST, REWORK or PARK.

Clarity before commitment.

The goal is not to kill every idea. The goal is to stop treating every idea as a commitment before it has earned one.

Built for real life

You may have a job, children, caring responsibilities, limited money and approximately twelve minutes of uninterrupted thought.

Use the full workbook when you have time. Use the Quick Decision Sheet when you need a fast first pass. Use the Validation Test Log when you are ready to test something in the real world.

A few things this is not

It is not a guarantee that your idea will work.

It is not a permission slip to avoid speaking to real customers.

It is not a score that decides your future for you.

And it is not designed to replace judgement, evidence or common sense.

Who this is for

People with a business idea, offer, product, service or project who want to work out whether it deserves more time, money or effort before they build it fully.

You do not need a business degree, a five-year plan or a logo that cost more than the idea. You need something you are considering and a willingness to test what might be true.

Less building on hope. More deciding with evidence.
